'A MATTER OF CIVILIZATION' BY HEIKE SCHNEIDER-MATZIGKEIT

‘A Matter of Civilization’ is the latest in a string of extraordinary art and photographic exhibitions to be launched in AKA over the last few years. London and Berlin based photographer, Heike-Schneider-Matzigkeit will be debuting her exhibition on Tuesday 23rd May 2006, which features prime cuts of her art and fashion work, alongside a selection of her music and underground club photography. The display will run until 21st July 2006, however the launch event will give press and the public the opportunity to be the first to see AKA adorned in some magical photography from one of London’s rising stars.
Schneider-Matzigkeit’s wide-ranging portfolio of photography encompasses the pathos, blurred sexuality and otherworldly beauty of the modern age, be it through her evocative exploration of inner-city life, or the operatic atmospherics of her metamorphosis portraits and tormented ‘Deadly Sins’ opus. It is this otherworldly nature of her photography that is so captivating, whether it be haunting portraits, evocative club shots, or startling rock ‘n’ roll imagery.
The past year has seen Schneider-Matzigkeit collaborate with a host of musical luminaries including Gary Numan, Echo and the Bunnymen, Primal Scream, The Tears and The Dresden Dolls. Additionally, her live photography has resulted in spellbinding shots of the likes of Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines, Bloc Party, Manic Street Preachers, Interpol and Iggy Pop.
‘A Matter of Civilization’ will be an opportunity to view an exhibition that looks at youth culture’s three most interesting facets; music, fashion and art. Unlike usual exhibitions, however, viewers will be able to peruse the photography in the style and comfort of the surroundings of one of London’s top bars. Join us on Tuesday 23rd May for another eye-popping exhibition at AKA.
