Tokyo Burlesque,
the new exhibition from innovative creative management agency Dutch Uncle launching
at AKA on Wednesday August 17th, is a stunning showcase for the work of Japanese
artist Izumi Nogawa. With prints, banners and animated presentations of Izumi’s
exquisitely dreamy yet richly sensuous artwork, & DJs on the night, Tokyo
Burlesque will be a kaleidoscopic summer event, bringing the magic of the East
to West Central street.
After a nomadic childhood which led her family across Japan, Izumi, a highly talented
artist who is qualified in environmental and graphic design, has translated the
myriad influences of her homeland into spellbinding artwork. Like the city of
Tokyo where she is resident, Izumi’s work takes the glamour, sexuality and
materialism of Western culture and transforms them within Japanese society, resulting
in unforgettable and enchanting images, full of colour and light.
With her central focus one of the most potent symbols of sex and power –
the female form – Izumi’s work takes the West’s classic dream
girl sillouhette on holiday to Japan, draping her in flowers and finery to produce
simply gorgeous imagery. In Izumi’s hands the modern dancing girl becomes
a timeless goddess, while Japan’s mysterious geishas and even Hello Kitty
cuties are celebrated through more contemporary imagery. Whether on a strip lit
stage or a bed of flowers, Izumi girls are always entirely enchanting creations!
So join us at AKA on Wednesday 17th August for the launch of Tokyo Burlesque,
and enjoy a fusion of art and music in one of London’s most stylish venues.
As part of a continuing programme of exhibitions, showcasing the work of the most
interesting independent artists, AKA and Dutch Uncle are proud to present the
work of Izumi Nagowa – for a night of Tokyo Burlesque.
